Why does your expensive watercolor paper warp into wavy puddles the moment you apply a wash?
It's basic cellulose thermodynamics. Watercolor paper is made of interlocking cotton fibers. When you apply water, the fibers in that specific wet area expand by up to 5% in volume. However, the dry edges of the paper remain locked in place. This uneven expansion creates extreme internal tension, forcing the paper to bend and buckle into waves, which causes your beautiful color pigments to pool unnaturally in the valleys.

The Total Submersion: Submerge your watercolor paper sheet (ideally 140lb or heavier) in a tub of cold water for exactly 3 minutes. This allows every single cotton fiber to expand uniformly to its absolute maximum limit.

The Board Mount: Lift the wet paper, let the excess water drip off for 10 seconds, and lay it flat onto a rigid wooden or acrylic backing board.

The Tape Seal: Secure all four edges of the paper using water-activated gummed paper tape, overlapping the edges by 0.25 inches. Wipe away excess water with a sponge and let it air-dry completely flat overnight. As it dries, the fibers shrink back down, pulling the paper incredibly tight across the board like a drumhead.
